Yes, I know, I'm in Southern California. How can it be?
Well, because there is no heating, nor insulation in my quirky little house, and it's been in the high 20's the last few nights.
How many quilts really, can one pile on a bed?
Tomorrow the car goes in to the shop. Hopefully I won't have to buy a new one next week. That would really suck.

You just finished paying off the car! And now it's possibly scrap?
And go to the hardware store and pick up a space heater.
Southern California and it's only in the 20s????
Those SoCal movies lied to me!!!!
Well, assuming 8' ceilings, and each quilt is 1/2" thick (including airspace between the quilts), and the top of the bed is 2' off the floor, that leaves 6' x 12" x 2 = 144 quilts.
Oh, was that a rhetorical question? I don't do well at rhetoricals. ;)
As a general rule, if you car has reached 120,000 miles, it's toast. If not, it should be repairable.
You know, I spent a few weeks in So.Cal during a winter and never felt so chilled (and I lived for six years in northern Indiana). I think it is the humidity that makes already chilly temperatures seem frigid.
I agree with Torn -- Get a ceramic heater.
